Rewilding is an approach to conservation that allows ecosystems to restore themselves. Rather than managing every detail, conservationists step back and let natural processes take over. In some projects, species that had disappeared from a region are deliberately reintroduced. Large animals such as wolves or beavers can transform an entire landscape. Beavers, for example, build dams that create wetlands and reduce the risk of flooding. Supporters argue that rewilding is both cheaper and more effective than traditional methods. Farmers, however, sometimes worry about predators threatening their livestock. Successful projects therefore depend on cooperation with local communities. When handled carefully, rewilding can benefit both people and wildlife.
