Microplastics

Microplastics are tiny fragments of plastic less than five millimetres long. They come from larger items that gradually break down in the environment. Synthetic clothing also releases countless fibres every time it is washed. Scientists have detected these particles in oceans, rainwater, and even remote mountains. More worryingly, they have been found in human blood and lungs. The long-term consequences for our health are still poorly understood. Filtering them out of drinking water is technically possible but costly. Many experts argue that reducing plastic production is the only lasting solution. Meanwhile, consumers can help by choosing natural fabrics and reusable containers.
